Box Office Review – The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

This film is the second attempt for Disney this year to create another franchise like Pirates of the Caribbean. The first film being the May released Prince of Persia. Like that film The Sorcerer's Apprentice is unable to be anything but mediocre.

The movie starts by explaining that a feud between magicians has taken place since the time of Merlin. It is said that a child will emerge who will win the fight for the good guys. Nicholas Cage is the one in charge of finding this kid. It takes him centuries but he does end up finding the kid. That kid is played by Jay Baruchel. The rest of the movie is all about Baruchel's character being trained and trying to find the strength within him to conquer evil. Basically it is a story that has been seen multiple times before.

That makes the film hard to criticise as any criticism feels like to much effort for this lacklustre film. The only way that Disney can establish another franchise that achieves the monetary success of the Pirates franchise is if they take a risk. Sorcerer's Apprentice plays everything safe and that makes for a boring watch.

We deserve better as an audience and I hope that in the future Disney's pg-13 action epics will be more fun and inventive.
