The first Rec is the cream of the crop when it comes to hand held horror films. It was remade poorly in 2008 as Quarantine. The worst part of the US remake is that it took out the demonic possession aspect that was in Rec. If a sequel to Quarantine is to be made they won’t be able to rip off Rec 2 as the film takes the demonic possession part and runs with it. The movie starts fifteen minutes after the first film and follows an elite task force escorting a health adviser into the building were Rec took place. You could literally play this and the first film back to back and it would be as one film. The differences are that there are more cameras used in Rec 2 and it follows two story lines. The task force has cameras mounted on their helmets and one guy is carrying a high grade video camera to document everything. The extra cameras allow the filmmakers room to play around with different angles and this adds more depth visually to the film. The other difference in the movie is not so great. The second storyline follows a group of three kids who sneak into the building via the sewer. This detour in the film was obviously a way to add more characters to the film and it is forced on the story. These added characters do make a great scene possibly, so I guess it was necessary, but it could have been done more subtly. Subtle is not what these films are meant to be I guess. This obvious as on a film making level the Rec series doesn’t have much to offer, but on a thrill ride level it delivers. It honestly feels like being on a theme park ride. There are times meant to build tension just like riding towards the top of a roller coaster. You know what’s going to happen, and when it does it is scary every time. I am not sure if it is necessary, but the Rec theme park will be expanding in 2011 with the release of Rec 3.Rec 2 won’t be getting a proper theater release, but it will be out on video in July
