Box Office Review - Monsters vs. Aliens

The best way to describe this movie is by using the title. It is simply monsters fighting aliens. The movie is rather bland and uninspired. It mostly centers on Reese Witherspoons character Susan. We see how she becomes a 50 foot woman inspired monster, and then she is taken captive by the US army where she meets other monsters who have suffered the same fate. Seth Rogen plays a character based off of The Blob named BOB. Will Arnett plays the Swamp thing inspired aquatic monster named The Missing Link, and Hugh Lurie plays Dr. Cockroach who is inspired by The Fly. They end up having to fight an alien played by Rainn Wilson, and that is the movie. Seth Rogen provides all of the laughs for the movie, and his character is not used very much. There are lots of references to science fiction and monster Movies, but all of these are forced. The voice talent in this is amazing, but it is wasted on a boring script. Along with the aforementioned actors, Kiefer Sutherland, Renee Zellweger, Stephen Colbert, Amy Poehler, Ed Helms, Paul Rudd, Jeffrey Tambor, and John Krasinski all have minor parts. The story seems pieced together and drags on, even though it is only an hour and a half. I wish that Dreamworks had of focused on either monsters or aliens for a movie, instead of just slapping the two together and calling it a day.
