Box Office Review - Crazy Heart

Crazy Heart has been getting a lot of attention due to the lead performance of Jeff Bridges. This attention is definitely warranted, but that is the majority of what the film has to offer. Crazy Heart’s story is nothing that special and it is a prime example of a movie being elevated by a performance. Bridges plays a musician past his prime; playing any gig he can get his hands on. He is a heavy drinker, and chain smoker who doesn’t see his life getting any better. Things are about to change for him though when he meets a reporter played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. My main problem with the movie comes from Bridges and Gyllenhaal’s relationship. After two interviews, they start a physical relationship, but it would have been more interesting if it was a platonic one. I digress though. Jeff Bridges was meant to play this part. He is a very capable singer and guitar player, so the long performance sequences are legitimate. All the music in the movie is great, due to the involvement of T-Bone Burnett. The story has been compared to The Wrestler, and that is understandable. There are some similarities, but the story of Crazy Heart is much more hopeful. Watch this movie because of the great performance by Jeff Bridges. Rewatch this movie because of the great performance by Jeff Bridges.
